Brand identity: the logo isn't the main thing

What a recognisable visual system is really made of — and why the logo is far from the first item on the list.

Brand identity: the logo isn't the main thing

When identity comes up, the first request is almost always “draw us a logo”. But the logo is the tip of a system that only works if there's a foundation beneath it: typography, colour, grid, photo style, tone of voice.

The system matters more than the symbol

Remove the logo from a social media post — if the post is still recognisably yours thanks to colour, type and the way it's shot, the identity works. If without the logo the post gets lost among dozens of similar ones, what's working isn't an identity but a single badge that's easy to lose when you scale to new formats.

Where to actually start

A practical order of work: first the palette and typography that set the mood; then the photo style — how people and product look in the frame; and only then the logo, which becomes the finishing point rather than the starting one. In this order the symbol grows out of a brand character you've already found, instead of being invented in a vacuum.
