How to choose a niche for a sports brand
The sportswear market is huge and crowded at the same time. How to find the place where people are actually waiting for you.

“Sportswear” isn't a niche — it's a whole industry with hundreds of players. Choosing a niche isn't an act of creative inspiration; it's a sequence of filters that narrow a huge market down to a size where a small team can actually win.
Three filters that work
The first is the size of the pain. Look not for “that would be nice” but for “I searched specifically and found nothing”. The second is purchase frequency: a niche with frequent purchases forgives more mistakes at launch because it gives a fast feedback loop. The third is channel access: is there a place where your audience already gathers and can be reached without a huge budget — a special-interest community, a running club, a sports club.
A narrow niche doesn't doom you to small money
The fear of a narrow niche is usually unfounded: it's much easier to become the first choice for ten thousand people with a specific need than one of a thousand options for ten million. You can always expand into adjacent niches later, once you have a base of loyal customers and know what really works.
Better to be the obvious choice for a narrow circle than one of many for a wide one.
